Collecting pocket knives can be a fun and exciting hobby for almost anyone. Pocket knife collecting has been a hobby of millions of people for hundreds (if not thousands) of years.
FFor some people, the joy and excitement is in the "chase" or "pursuit" of any particular pocket knife or set of pocket knives. Yet for others, the excitement is in owning them, and displaying them for others to also enjoy.
The pocket knife industry has shown tremendous growth in recent years, and that growth continues today. Prices of these types of knives vary, according to the what the knife is constructed of, and from where it originates from.
There are literally millions of versions from which to choose. Some have surgical stainless steel blades, while others sport other types of high impact metals. The handles on pocket knives can vary greatly as well. There are the folding and straight knives that offer handles with genuine wooden inlays, animal bone components, laminates, plastic. Some are simply 100% metal.
Then there are the collectible pocket knives that offer matching keychains with a fantastic Bald Eagle on them, or a simulated or real jewel fashioned into the handle itself.
For me, the joy and excitement of collecting pocket knives, folding knives, boot knives, and straight knives, is a combination of all that has been mentioned above.

If someone is considering knife collecting as a hobby, there are a couple of decisions that need to be made early. First, what appeals to you about collecting knives? The answer to that question will provide you with some clues as to what direction to take with your collection. For example do you like old ones? If so, then you have just narrowed the field by at least half, by eliminating customs, current productions, etc. Do you like an particular brand or maker? If so, then a lot of collectors focus on brands and will collect any type of knife (patterns) that maker made. On the other hand, is there a particular type of knife/pattern that turns you on? If so, that helps your focus tremendously. For the last 10 years, I have focused on a specific pattern. I do like old knives, particularly, pre-1940. The pattern I collect is called an elephant toenail or sunfish knife. It is a folding pocketknife that is one of the largest pocketknives. It was made for hard outdoor work. It is also one of the oddest pocketknives, it that its masterblade and handles are very large.
I have been collecting pocket knives/folding knives for about 10 years and have yet thru any of my travels found someone to trade with. I live in Pgh Pa and they do not have any knife shows that I am aware of. How do I find someone to trade? Thanks
